What is IMSDC Certification?

Certification identifies the certified company as a firm that meets the definition of a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) as established by the National Minority Supplier Development Council in the Certification Policy and Procedures Manual.
 

How can I become Certified by the National Minority Supplier Development Council?

The NMSDC regional council nearest a company's headquarters conducts the annual certification process to assure that the business is owned, operated and controlled by minorities: Asian, Black, Hispanic and/or Native American. Our standardized procedures assure consistent, identical review for the certification of each MBE. Wherever your business interests, regional certification guarantees national reciprocation. Certified MBEs are listed in their Councils' Minority Supplier Directory and in the NMSDC national database: the Minority Business Information System (MBISYS).
 

What ethnic groups are recognized as Minorities by the IMSDC?

An individual who is a citizen of the United States and at least 1/4 or 25% minimum (documentation to support claim of 25% my be required from applicant) of the following ethnic groups:
  • African American
  • Hispanic American
  • Native American
  • Asian-Pacific American
  • Asian-Indian American
 

What are the Basic Requirements for IMSDC Certification?

Basic requirements are:
  • Location in the Geographic Area Serviced by the IMSDC
  • Minority Ownership
  • Minority Operation
  • Minority Control
 

How long does it take to get certified?

The length of time required for certification varies from applicant to applicant. The two major factors determining the amount of time to become certified are:
  • Proper Completion of the File by the Applicant
  • The Certification Committee's Schedule
The usual time required to become certified, after a complete application has been received by the staff is 45 days
 

What is the typical certification process?

The typical certification process includes:
  • A Complete Application is Submitted to the IMSDC
  • Certification Manager reviews the Application
  • Upon Completion of the File, an On-Site Visit is Performed
  • Certification Manager submits a Recommendation to the Certification Committee
  • Certification Committee submits a Recommendation to the Board of Directors
  • The Board of Directors makes a Determination
  • The Applicant is Certified/Denied Certification
 

Who is responsible for certification at the IMSDC?

The Certification Manager, Michelle House at the IMSDC. Questions regarding application. policy and procedure should be directed to the Certification Manager.
No Staff member makes the final decisions with regard to the denial or certification of any file.
 

How can I receive an application form?

You may contact personnel at the Central and Northern District Offices to have an application mailed to you. You may pick up an application at the IMSDC offices or you may download the form from our site.
 

What is the process once I become certified?

Once you become certified:
  • You will receive a Certification of Certification signed by the Executive Director, featuring your certification number and expiration date.
  • You will receive a letter explaining your status, signed by the Certification Manager.
  • You will receive a current listing of our Corporate Membership.
  • Your company will be placed on our MBE Listing.
  • You will receive a listing of all the Affiliate Regional Councils of the NMSDC
 

How do I remain certified?

Any changes your company experiences must be immediately related to the IMSDC, to include those affecting: ownership, operation, control, subsidiaries, affiliates, product/services provided, key employees, addresses, telephone numbers, etc.
 
You must re-certify annually, in a timely fashion. Failure to re-certify in accordance with the notice you receive from the IMSDC will result in the revocation of your company's certification.
 

What are some of the benefits of certification with the IMSDC?

The benefits of being certified with the IMSDC are:
  • Access to our Corporate Membership via networking events
  • Referrals to inquiring companies seeking MBEs with which to transact business
  • A listing in the directory used by our Corporate members to locate potential suppliers. And a detailed listing of our Corporate members and points of contact. This is a very valuable marketing tool.
  • One-on-one counseling and marketing assistance from the IMSDC staff
  • Minority Business Information Center - essential business development data and resources
  • Business Consortium Fund - access to working capital loans
